Penn College receives $100,000 scholarship commitment

Friday, October 30, 2026

The philanthropic commitment of a Williamsport man has resulted in a $100,000 endowed scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Bill Alsted has established the H. William Alsted Endowed Scholarship Fund with the Penn College Foundation. To be eligible for scholarship awards, full-time students must be enrolled in an associate degree in automotive technology or collision repair technology with the intention of adding a certificate in automotive restoration. Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in construction management are also eligible. Preference will be given to students who are from Bradford, Clinton, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga or Union counties.

Awards from the scholarship will be renewable if the recipient maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. One $5,000 award has been distributed for the 2026-27 academic year.

“Bill and his partner, Beverley Porter, thought very carefully and deliberately about the establishment of this scholarship and chose the award criteria specifically to benefit Bill’s areas of interest,” said Shanin L. Dougherty, senior corporate relations officer. “Bill and Beverley are proponents of a Penn College education, and this scholarship will impact many students for years to come.”

Students interested in the specialized field of automotive restoration will often combine that one-year certificate with an associate degree in collision repair technology or automotive technology. Penn College automotive restoration alumni typically work for custom fabrication shops, automotive museums and automotive auction houses. The construction management bachelor’s degree program at Penn College boasts a 100% overall placement rate with 84% of students hired prior to graduation. Potential careers include project manager, construction manager and estimator.

“The rewards of a Penn College degree are well known. By establishing this scholarship, Beverley and I hope more students will have access to that education every year,” Alsted said. “It gives us a great sense of pride knowing that students, especially those from northcentral Pennsylvania, will benefit from the scholarship fund.”

“We could not be more grateful to Bill and Beverley for their vision and generosity,” said Kyle A. Smith, vice president for college relations. “The endowed scholarship reflects their belief in the transformative value of education and will provide meaningful support to Penn College students for generations to come.”
