Pennsylvania College of Technology will hold an Open House on Sunday, Oct. 24, offering prospective students, their families and friends an opportunity to explore academic programs, student life, and the college's campus and facilities. The event will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A beautiful fall weekend provided the backdrop for four days of campus activities geared to alumni and current students alike, from fireworks and reunions to sporting events and a visit from a reality-TV personality, as Pennsylvania College of Technology observed Homecoming 2010.

The healthful benefits of outdoor recreation will be shared by Dennis F. Ringling, a forestry professor at Pennsylvania College of Technology, during the Fall 2010 Madigan Library Forum. The free, public forum, "Let Nature Nurture Your Health," will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the second-floor reading loft. Light refreshments will be served.

Winners of this year's "Homecoming Stage X-"Building the Future" door-decorating contest have been announced from among thenine offices and departments that participated across campus. The School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies won first prize and a large cookie donated by Dining Services.

An open discussion about the recent increase in suicides among gay students will be held at Pennsylvania College of Technology in conjunction with National Coming Out Day on Monday, Oct. 11. With a message of "Stop the Violence, End the Silence!

On Oct. 23, Pennsylvania College of Technology's SMART Girls will host 10th- and, for the first time, 11th-grade girls to encourage an ongoing interest in science and math. The college's Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies (SMART Girls) project was developed to counter the distressing tendency of girls to sidestep math and sciences as they enter adolescence.

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will host artist-in-residence Antonio Puri on campus Oct. 17-22. The gallery will exhibit his work, in a collection titled "I Am," Oct. 7 to Nov. 7.

Girls in seventh and eighth grades visited campus Saturday to partake in SMART (Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies) Girls activities.

The graduating college class of 2010, like the previous two graduating classes,is facing a challenging job market. According to a 2009 survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, only 19.7 percent of that year's graduates who applied for a job had one by the time they graduated. That's in contrast to 51 percentin 2008!

The Penn College women's volleyball team helped raise awareness of breast cancer in a weekend match that also honored its lone graduating senior. The team (with the help of Kristi L. Hammaker, health and fitness specialist; volleyball coach Bambi A. Hawkins and assistant coach Amber L.
