Registration Open for Oct. 23 SMART Girls Session

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

On Oct. 23, Pennsylvania College of Technology's SMART Girls will host 10th- and, for the first time, 11th-grade girls to encourage an ongoing interest in science and math.

The college's Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies (SMART Girls) project was developed to counter the distressing tendency of girls to sidestep math and sciences as they enter adolescence. Expanded for this session to provide a career-exploration component for the older girls, the program offers a varied schedule of hands-on activities to show the real-life worth of math and science in the working world.

The upcoming event includes a fun, hands-on workshop session called "Come Climb With Us!"

Using ropes and saddles, the girls will learn the basics of tree-climbing, safety, techniques and applications; use the climbing systems and techniques of tree-care professionals; and try climbing firsthand. The girls also will participate in a main campus tour and in an activity that will provide them with the tools needed to continue with their career and educational planning.

The cost of the daylong session, which is open to the first 20 girls who enroll by the Oct. 18 deadline, is $25. To register or to learn more, visit online , e-mail or call 570-327-4502.

The college will host a summer SMART Girls residential experience from July 11-15 for girls entering ninth and 10th grades.
