Outdoor Recreation Topic for Nov. 11 Library Forum at Penn College
Friday, October 8, 2010
The healthful benefits of outdoor recreation will be shared by Dennis F. Ringling, a forestry professor at Pennsylvania College of Technology, during the Fall 2010 Madigan Library Forum.
The free, public forum, "Let Nature Nurture Your Health," will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the second-floor reading loft. Light refreshments will be served.
"A good question to ask oneself would be, "Am I connected to the environment as much as I should be?'" Ringling said. "There are definite benefits to such a relationship. Come and find out!" The discussion of ways that children and adults can be healthier by connecting with nature will draw from the concept of "Nature Deficit Disorder," a term coined by Richard Louv, author of "The Last Child in the Woods," who wrote of "an increasing divide between the young and the natural world."
"Contact with nature is necessary for healthy child and adult development," Louv emphasized.
Ringling, lead faculty for forestry since 2006 and this year's recipient of the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award, joined the college faculty in 1972. He holds a doctorate from Temple University, a master's degree from The Pennsylvania State University and two bachelor's degrees from Penn State.
