Although he ran on both the cross country and track teams while a student at Williamsport Area High School in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mike Paulhamus was very "green" during his first season as Pennsylvania College of Technology cross country coach. "I wasn't sure (what to expect) when I came in. I got hired the day that practice started, and had a lot of freshmen.
Alyssa Covas, of Pottsville, a graduate of Minersville Area High School, has been named Pennsylvania College of Technology's "Student-Athlete of the Week" for Sept. 16-22. Covas, a sophomore pre-nursing student, chose to postpone her entry into the military and remain at Penn College for an additional semester and it has paid dividends for the college women's volleyball team.
The Pennsylvania College of Technology golf team finished its regular-season matches Tuesday with a victory at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo. The team shot a total of 314, which was 21 strokes better than the closest competitor: Penn State New Kensington. The score allowed the golf team to secure first place in the Western Division of the PSU Athletic Conference.
Pennsylvania College of Technology golfers led a five-team field to claim victory in Thursday's Penn State Mont Alto Tournament at the Penn National course in Fayetteville. Leading the way individually for the Wildcats was junior Doug Wagner, of Huntington Mills, who shot a 78 and the only round in the 70s among the competing colleges.
Shaun M. McQuay of Watsontown, a graduate of Warrior Run High School , has been named Pennsylvania College of Technology's first "Student-Athlete of the Week" for Sept. 9-16.
During four of its past six seasons, women's soccer teams at Pennsylvania College of Technology have had winning campaigns and captured three championships. In fact, coach Kim Antanitis' first team last fall lost only once in 10 matches and won the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference crown. But as good as that was, she's looking for more in building the program.
Under blue skies and on a perfect day for golf, the Penn College team shot one of its better rounds of the past couple of years Wednesday. The team's winning score on its home White Deer course was 303, followed by Penn State New Kensington at 317.
If its first outing of the season is any indication, Pennsylvania College of Technology golfers are in for another excellent campaign.
Penn College hosted a "Meet the Wildcats" night Thursday on the patio outside the Susquehanna Room. More than 100 athletes and coaches in eight fall sports were in uniform and available for photographs and interviews. "Penn College has been one of the most successful colleges in our division over the past 15 years," said Mike Stanzione, director of athletics.
