ERIE − U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has announced that the Pennsylvania State Workforce Investment Board, in collaboration with Penn State, will receive a $3.75 million grant from the Department of Labor to increase business retention and growth within the plastics industry.

An episode of "You're the Chef," Pennsylvania College of Technology's public television cooking series, won a Bronze Award in the College Video Program category of the 2004 Paragon Awards competition sponsored by the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations. The award recognizes excellence in communications at community, junior and technical colleges.

David L. Evans, professor of biology at Pennsylvania College of Technology, is writing a weekly column for one publisher and has written several chapters in a textbook for another. In addition, his biography will be included in an edition of "Who's Who in Executives and Professionals." Evans was hired by Dushkin publishers to write a weekly column about homeland security.

The School of Health Sciences at Pennsylvania College of Technology has begun accepting students into its newest nursing major, which was approved recently by the state Board of Nursing. Students who enroll in the new major will enter as freshmen in a four-year program that leads to a bachelor-of-science degree and helps prepare them to take the registered-nurse licensing exam.

Pennsylvania College of Technology was awarded a Workforce Leadership Award recently by the state Department of Education's Bureau of Career and Technical Education. The awards are given to schools that have established a unified curriculum across two-year career and technical programs and two- and four-year postsecondary programs − also known as "2+2+2" programs.

All 11 of Pennsylvania College of Technology's December associate-degree nursing graduates who attempted their licensing exam by March 31 passed the test on their first try. Those results mean Penn College's pass rate for April 1, 2004, to March 31, 2005, is 95.59 percent, the highest pass rate for associate-degree programs in the state for that time period.

Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver and ABC Sports commentator Lynn Swann toured Penn College on Thursday as a guest of state Rep. Brett O. Feese, a member of the college's board of directors. Swann, who helped the Pittsburgh Steelers win four Super Bowl championships, is exploring the possibility of running for governor next year.
