Pennsylvania College of Technology's baseball team continues pursuit of its second straight Penn State University Athletic Conference championship when it returns to the field Saturday at 1 p.m. at Penn State New Kensington. "After a long winter, you're always excited to get those first games out of the way," coach Chris Howard said. "You get tired of all the batting practice and ground balls.

Penn College is ranked a solid second in the most recent United States Collegiate Athletic Association Director's Cup standings. Two-time winner Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Va., holdsthe top spot with 564 points, while Penn College is second with 465.5 points. Spalding University in Louisville, Ky., is third with 250 points.

Although roster numbers are down somewhat this year, the optimism for the coming women's softball season expressed by Pennsylvania College of Technology coach Roger Harris is as high as ever. The Wildcats, Harris' eighth edition, open their season Tuesday at Penn State Harrisburg. "Last fall and early this spring, when I started looking at who we had, I was optimistic," Harris said.

Joe Simon, a junior guard-forward on the Penn College men's basketball team, has been awarded Penn State University Athletic Conference Honorable Mention honors. Simon, a business management student from Renovo, scored 382 points during the Wildcats' 18-12 season that included a sixth-place finish in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament.

Pennsylvania College of Technology archers closed out the indoor portion of their schedule in grand fashion last weekend, taking one team first, two team seconds and three individual firsts at the U.S. Collegiate Indoor Eastern Regionals in Harrisonburg, Va. Two Penn College men's basketball players have been named to the 2009 Penn State University Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. Leroy Joiner, a freshman guard from Williamsport, and Craig Flint, a senior guard from Port Allegany, were honored by the conference Monday. Joiner, an early childhood education major, led the team in scoring this season with 492 points.

Two Penn College women's basketball players have received postseason honors. Erica Logan, a sophomore from Montoursville, was named to the 2008-09 Penn State University Athletic Conference All-Conference Team, while Kelsey Mack, a freshman from Douglassville, received honorable-mention recognition.

Members of Penn College's athletics teams volunteered Monday at Williamsport's Sheridan Elementary School to participate in the Read Across America Day, nationwide celebration held annually around the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss. The student-athletes read to the children, and Bradley Robinson and Samantha Mills did a "Green Eggs and Ham" readers' theater.
