Carolyn G. Martin Memorial Scholarship Established at Penn College
Monday, September 24, 2012
Pennsylvania College of Technology’s longtime senior vice president has created a scholarship fund at the college honoring his late wife.
William J. Martin established the Carolyn G. Martin Memorial Scholarship to pay tribute to his wife of nearly 42 years, who died July 10. Plans are for the scholarship fund to be endowed so that awards can be made in perpetuity.
The scholarship will benefit female students enrolled in the physical fitness specialist major who have completed two semesters of study and have a GPA of 3.0 or better. Marisa L. Fink, a sophomore from Altoona, is the first recipient of the scholarship.
Carolyn Martin worked for World Travel International and had been a fitness instructor at the former Nautilus and Ragnar's Racquetball and Fitness Club. She was an avid racquetball player and organized local tournaments for many years. She also taught at Loyalsock Township High School and the Lycoming Child Day Care Center. She held a Bachelor of Science degree from The Pennsylvania State University.
“While working at Penn College and serving as a director of the Penn College Foundation, I have seen firsthand the positive impact that scholarship aid can have on a college student,” William Martin said. “It seems most fitting to establish a scholarship in Carolyn’s memory that will benefit young women pursuing a career in fitness instruction, as that was a passion of Carolyn’s during her life.”
“Bill’s life has been dedicated to fostering the growth and developmental success of young people,” said Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour. “Establishing this scholarship not only adds to that legacy but also allows the memory of Carolyn and her passion for lifelong fitness to live on forever.”
