Concert at Penn College to Benefit Memorial Scholarship Fund

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

A March 31 concert on Pennsylvania College of Technology's main campus in Williamsport will benefit a scholarship fund memorializing a dental hygiene major and student leader.

The band Parlance will headline the concert, which is sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ. It will be held at 7 p.m. on the lawn outside the college's Thompson Professional Development Center. In case of inclement weather, the concertwill be moved into the Field House.

The event is the latest in a series of student-organized fundraisers on behalf of the Student Government Association's Tracy A. Garis Memorial Scholarship. A dental hygiene major, Resident Assistant and Student Ambassador from Hellertown, Garis was killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 80 in Luzerne County on June 4.

Concert donations will be added to a scholarship fund established in her memory, which will give first preference for awards to a full-time student in one of Penn College's bachelor's or associate degrees in dental hygiene who is an active student leader on campus.

A number of campus organizations have hosted benefits, from bake sales to a rock-a-thon, and President Davie Jane Gilmour whose career at the college began as a dental hygiene instructor has pledged a matching donation.
