A Hughesville High School senior is the recipient of the 2010 Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Kristina Kline, of Muncy, was presented with the scholarship award named in honor of the late wife of former state Sen. Roger A. Madigan at a Thursday ceremony in the college Field House. Kline will attend Penn College in the fall and major in general studies.
The award was announced at the 23rd Senatorial District's annual Student Government Seminar, now hosted by Madigan's successor, Sen. Gene Yaw. Madigan represented the district from 1985 until his retirement in 2009. The scholarship is open to high school students who attend the seminar and subsequently enroll as full-time students at Penn College.
The Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship may be used to help defray the costs of tuition, fees, books, tools and other required supplies. Applicants are required to write an essay describing the community service they have performed and the value that service has added to the community.
Kline is a 13-year member of the Girl Scouts and earned the organization's highest achievement: the Gold Award. She has gone on mission trips with her church in both the United States and Jamaica. She sings in church and has sung the national anthem at area sporting events. She is a Civil War re-enactor, and she volunteers at a cheer camp in the summer.
Kline is a varsity cheerleader (for the football and basketball competition squad) and participates in varsity indoor and outdoor track and field (team captain and historian). Her activities include Chorus, Varsity Club, Big Buddy, Club ELET and Student Council.
The 23rd Senatorial District's annual Student Government Seminar enables students from high schools throughout the district to meet with elected officials, members of the state's executive branch, representatives of special-interest groups and members of the news media for a day of panel discussions providing insights into the workings of state government.
