The Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation Inc. Board of Directors recently designated funds to establish a new scholarship and increase the amount of an existing scholarship in honor and memory of one of Williamsport's best-known families.
The foundation's directors designated a bequest from the estate of William Pickelner to establish a new scholarship in memory of William and Sara Pickelner and to add to an existing scholarship in memory of David Pickelner.
The newly endowed William and Sara Pickelner Scholarship is anticipated to generate an annual award of $1,000. Eligible students can be enrolled full time or part time in any major at Penn College, but must be residents of Lycoming County.
The David Pickelner Scholarship, which had been generating annual awards of $250, is now anticipated to generate annual awards of $1,000. Originally established in 1996, the scholarship benefits students enrolled in an electronics program at Penn College.
William Pickelner was a charter member of the Penn College Foundation Board of Directors and served as its chairperson for two years. He also served on the Community Arts Center's Board of Directors along with his wife, Sara. In 1982, Pickelner received an honorary degree from Williamsport Area Community College and was honored with the Trustees' College Service Award.
"Bill Pickelner was one of the most beloved men in Williamsport, involved in virtually every aspect of the community," said college President Davie Jane Gilmour. "The impact he and Sara had on Williamsport and the surrounding area will be felt for generations. It is very fitting for the Penn College Foundation Board of Directors to honor the Pickelner family in this way."
Penn College is a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University, committed to applied technology education. With nearly 6,500 students enrolled in bachelor-degree, associate-degree and certificate majors, Penn College has the second-largest enrollment in the Penn State system.
