New Scholarship to Benefit Nursing Students at Penn College
Tuesday, March 23, 2010
A gift from the estate of a longtime school librarian is being used to establish a scholarship fund for students in nursing majors at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
The estate of Barbara Oldt has donated more than $224,000 to Penn College to establish the Mary Ellen Horlacher Oldt Nursing Scholarship.
Barbara Oldt died in August 2007. She had a long career as a school librarian, first in the Tri-County School District in Canton, then for 39 years at Mifflinburg Area High School, retiring in 1992. The scholarship fund is named in memory of her mother.
The Mary Ellen Horlacher Oldt Nursing Scholarship fund will serve as a permanent source of scholarship awards for nursing students at Penn College, including students in the pre-nursing program. The endowment is expected to generate approximately $9,000 in awards per year for successful applicants from Union, Snyder and Northumberland counties.
Penn College's School of Health Sciences offers nursing at the baccalaureate- and associate-degree levels, as well as a practical nursing certificate.
Penn College is a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University, committed to applied technology education. With more than 6,500 students enrolled in bachelor-degree, associate-degree and certificate majors, the college has the second-largest enrollment in the Penn State system.
