A new scholarship fund at Pennsylvania College of Technology memorializes an instructor at the college who passed away last October.
Joseph M. Younes lost his battle with cancer on Oct. 23 at the age of 54. Younes was an instructor of electrical technology/occupations at Penn College for 16 years, and he was an alumnus of the college's electrical technology major.
The Joseph M. Younes Memorial Scholarship will be open to full-time or part-time students in the college's bachelor's degrees in building automation technology-electrical technology emphasis and building automation technology-electromechanical maintenance technology emphasis, as well as associate degrees in electrical technology and electromechanical maintenance technology.
Recipients of awards from the Joseph M. Younes Memorial Scholarship will be selected based on academic performance and financial need, with preference going to recipients of awards from the fund in prior years.
"Joe was an outstanding teacher," said his widow, Linda M. Younes. "There was nothing more that he enjoyed than to see his students succeed in every aspect of their lives."
"We are grateful to Linda for establishing this scholarship in memory of her husband," said Robb Dietrich, executive director of the Penn College Foundation. "It is extremely fitting that a scholarship bearing his name will help students in perpetuity."
Penn College is accepting donations toward building the scholarship fund to a permanent endowment of at least $25,000, at which time it will begin generating awards for students. Alumni and friends can donate to the Joseph M. Younes Memorial Scholarship by mail to Penn College Foundation, One College Avenue, Williamsport, PA 17701-5799, or online .
