Emergency-Need Scholarship Renamed to Memorialize Staff Member
Friday, May 22, 2009
A Pennsylvania College of Technology scholarship fund that provides awards to students facing emergency financial challenges has been renamed in honor of a member of the Financial Aid Office staff who died in January.
The Financial Aid Emergency Need Scholarship, which was established by the Financial Aid Office staff in 2007, has been renamed the Mary Beth Saar Memorial Financial Aid Emergency Need Scholarship.
The scholarship provides awards to Penn College students who have a financial emergency that may jeopardize their ability to remain as a college student.
Saar worked as a financial aid specialist in federal programs from 2002 until her death on Jan. 23 at the age of 52. She had attended the Penn College forerunner Williamsport Area Community College and held an American Bankers Association banking degree, as well as several certificates in finance and banking.
"From the first moment I met Mary Beth, it was obvious she loved working at Penn College and treasured her work that she did with students," said Dennis R. Correll, associate dean for admissions and financial aid. "She was a consummate professional, always trying to make processes easier for parents and students to ensure they maximized their financial-aid opportunities. Mary Beth will be forever missed. Her time with us as a colleague and dear friend will be cherished forever."
Alumni, employees and friends who would like to make a gift to the Mary Beth Saar Memorial Financial Aid Emergency Relief Scholarship can do so online or by mail to the Penn College Institutional Advancement Office, One College Avenue, Williamsport, PA, 17701-5799.
Penn College is a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University, committed to applied technology education. With more than 6,500 students enrolled in bachelor-degree, associate-degree and certificate majors, Penn College has the second-largest enrollment in the Penn State system.
