Madalis Memorial Scholarship Established at Penn College

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

A Bloomsburg couple has established a scholarship fund that encourages students in the Mount Carmel Area School District to attend Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Edward and Sharon Madalis recently signed the agreement establishing the fund in memory of Edward's parents, Walter and Nancy Madalis.

"My parents placed a strong emphasis on the value of continued education," Edward Madalis said. "It is a pleasure to offer this scholarship in their memory."

The Walter and Nancy Madalis Memorial Scholarship will provide an annual award of $500. The recipients will be chosen from among applicants who are enrolled as full-time students at Penn College, have graduated from Mount Carmel Area High School or Lourdes Regional High School, and have a home residence in the Mount Carmel Area School District.

Edward Madalis, who is a graduate of Mount Carmel Area High School, noted that he and his wife previously sponsored a scholarship for a student from those schools to attend Penn College, but they decided to formalize the arrangement with the college and allow the college's Financial Aid Office to select the recipients.

"We are very grateful for the generosity of Ed and Sharon in creating this scholarship in memory of Ed's parents," said Robb Dietrich, executive director of the Penn College Foundation. "This scholarship will be a welcome resource for a student from the Mount Carmel area who faces the sometimes difficult challenge of paying for his or her education."

Penn College is a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University, committed to applied technology education. With more than 6,500 students enrolled in bachelor-degree, associate-degree and certificate majors, Penn College has the second-highest enrollment in the Penn State system.
