Two endowed scholarships and a new Toyota award are among recent gifts presented through the Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation.
Birch B. and Ann Marie Phillips, of Williamsport, contributed $25,000 to establish an endowed scholarship for incoming freshmen beginning in Fall 1999. Mr. Phillips is a member of the College's Board of Directors; Mrs. Phillips is a member of the Foundation Board.
The scholarship will target students enrolling in technical majors who have demonstrated "the desire and potential to succeed in their chosen major without regard to past academic performance." Lycoming County high school graduates who are enrolling full time in the Schools of Business and Computer Technologies, Construction and Design Technologies, Industrial and Engineering Technologies, or Transportation Technology are eligible. Penn College's Financial Aid Office will work with high school guidance counselors to identify candidates for the award.
Also beginning in Fall 1999, first-year students enrolling in the School of Hospitality will be eligible for a new endowed scholarship created by an anonymous $100,000 gift.
To be eligible, students must meet academic and economic criteria and demonstrate awards or honors for culinary performance, community activity participation and good moral character. First preference will be given to Pennsylvania residents.
Central Atlantic Toyota Distributors, based in Glen Burnie, Md., established the John Winkles Memorial Scholarship in memory of a CATD executive.
Beginning in 1998-99, CATD will award $10,000 to eligible students in the automotive technology/Toyota emphasis major ($5,000 to a first-year student and $5,000 to a second-year student).
To launch the scholarship, CATD awarded $2,500 in the spring '98 semester to Matthew Snyder, of Pennsylvania Furnace, a first-year Toyota student.
Sarah M. Ellegood, of Phoenix, donated an additional $30,000 to the Ellegood Dental Hygiene Scholarship Fund. This scholarship was endowed last year with an initial gift of $20,000. Ellegood is the mother of Kathleen E. Morr, director of dental hygiene at Penn College.
The Ellegood award is a merit-based scholarship for students enrolled in either the associate or bachelor degree dental hygiene major.
