Wayne Township Landfill Scholarship Initiated at Penn College

Monday, June 23, 2014

Officials at the Wayne Township Landfill in Clinton County have established a scholarship fund to benefit Pennsylvania College of Technology students enrolled in diesel and heavy equipment majors.

The fund will generate two $1,000 awards each year to full-time students from Clinton and Lycoming counties. Preference will be given to those seeking two-year degrees in heavy equipment technology (including the technician, operator and Caterpillar equipment emphases) or diesel technology.

Persun, operations manager and an alumnus of Penn College predecessor Williamsport Area Community College, serves on the Heavy Construction Equipment Program Advisory Committee.

Landfill personnel also provide judges and other support for the college’s Heavy Equipment Rodeo, regularly held during Open House at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center.

“Penn College appreciates the support from the Wayne Township Landfill and Clinton County Solid Waste Authority,” said Debra M. Miller, the college’s director of corporate relations. “This new scholarship will provide important financial support to students in majors that relate to their business. We value the relationship with Wayne Township Landfill and its commitment to our students and programs.”

The new scholarship comes during the Penn College Scholarship Campaign, a fundraising effort coinciding with Penn College’s Centennial celebration throughout 2014. The campaign goal is to increase scholarship support for students as the institution begins its second century.

To date, the campaign has raised over $5.4 million in outright contributions, pledges and planned gifts. As a result, the Penn College Foundation will more than double the amount of scholarship support during the 2014-15 academic year than it did prior to the launch of the campaign.
