Friday, November 21, 2008

'Mountain Air,' tempera on panel, 1989, 22 inches by 32 inchesThe Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will host "Exalting Everyday Elements," a collection of paintings by David Armstrong, from Dec. 2-17.

This popular exhibit returns to the gallery for a third year with a new selection of Armstrong's original works. Originals and reproductions will be available for acquisition to benefit the Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation.

Armstrong, who died in 1998, said of his paintings: "My work attempts to present my vision of beauty through ordinary elements of the commonplace. I believe great works of art are not achieved through complicated statements, but rather simple ones, which allow painter and viewer alike to see beneath the surface, to question, and in our individual ways, to attempt an answer to the question of how we integrate our human needs with the natural world."

The quality and popularity of Armstrong's work places him in company among America's greatest realist painters. Museum exhibitions include a major 30-year retrospective held at the Butler Institute of American Art. Reproductions of Armstrong's work have been in the print marketplace for more than 20 years with more than 60 sold-out editions.

An opening reception for the exhibit will take place in the gallery from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, and Sunday, Dec. 7.

Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 2 to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All exhibits are free and open to the public. The gallery is closed Dec. 18 to Jan. 10.
