Introduction to engineered systems design. Topics include heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics as they relate to HVAC systems as well as an introduction to building thermal load calculations and basic air distribution design. The different types of equipment and the proper selection for each application are covered. Fall Only.

Introduction to the design methodology used in residential and commercial environmental comfort systems. Topics include the requirements of sizing and selecting equipment, distribution systems controls, and other devices necessary for efficient system design and installation. Basic control systems theory and design. Additional topics include control systems and wiring diagrams, sensors, and network communications. Custom control strategies are developed and programmed. Environmental Impacts of the HVAC Industry

BHV431

Study of the HVAC industry impacts on the natural environment in the U.S. and the world, including the social and technological responses to these environmental impacts. Central topics include pollution sources, the extent and forms of water, air and solid waste pollution, health effects, the historical growth of the environmental movement and the HVAC industry, and technological responses to HVAC related pollutants. Other important topics include refrigerant use and management, fuel spills and storage, stack emissions and green buildings. Emphasis is on the place technological development and energy efficiency has in reducing negative environmental impacts. Formal and informal writing is required. (Writing Enriched ) Spring Only.

Mechanical System Design

Advanced principles of heating, ventilation and air conditioning mechanical system design methodologies related to project management and software applications. Topics include buildings' heating, ventilation and air conditioning mechanical systems ranging from complex system designs, commercial kitchens, and fit-out projects. Discussions and practical applications cover project management, energy management, indoor air quality, HVAC controls, and piping systems. Coursework includes working in small teams to investigate commercial HVAC projects, identifying design strategies, and planning a project's development and completion. Spring Only.

Senior Project

BHV495

Capstone course for students in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Design Technology program. Students select a HVAC- related subject of personal interest and design a practical mechanical system. Design activities include research, analysis, equipment selections, developing equipment specifications and project planning. Projects are presented in both written and oral formats. Spring Only.
