Some deferments are processed through the National Student Loan Clearinghouse, a nonprofit industry-sponsored corporation representing schools, guarantors, lenders, and services for the sole purpose of standardizing, simplifying, and automating enrollment verifications and deferment processing. Penn College provides student enrollment verification data – including students' names, Social Security numbers, and enrollment status – to the Clearinghouse on a regular basis. Release of this information to the Clearinghouse has been approved by the U.S. Department of Education and ruled to be in compliance with the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
If you are currently receiving repayment requests from your lender or if you are currently enrolled in a total of at least 6 credits, some at another college and less than 5 credits at Penn College, you may want to make this official request to defer loan payments. First, you will need to check NSLDS (the National Student Loan Data System) to determine the federal loan program you have borrowed through. You may have a federal loan through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program, the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program, or one loan through each program. To make a request for deferment of these these loans you will use the In-School Deferment Request form. Note that you complete the first three sections, and the Penn College Registrar's Office completes Section 4. Return completed form to the address provided on the form. If you are not sure which loan program your federal loan is through, contact the Financial Aid Office.
