Pennsylvania College of Technology has presented student achievement awards to its Spring 2018 graduates. More than 900 students petitioned to graduate at the conclusion of the spring semester, and three commencement ceremonies were held May 11-12 at the Community Arts Center. Penn College is a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University.

Acting locally to spotlight a worldwide concern, three Hughesville High School juniors are planning a 5K Race for Freedom this summer to make the community more aware of human trafficking. The students – Valerie Ammar-Khodja, Lauren Hall and Logan Woolcock – were presented with a $1,791 check during a Penn College Youth Leadership graduation ceremony on May 3.

During the past few years, the Pennsylvania College of Technology Baja SAE team has been among the world’s best. Now, the dedicated students want to be the best. Penn College can obtain that lofty ranking when it competes against 99 other schools in the next Society of Automotive Engineers event, scheduled for May 17-20 in Pittsburg, Kansas. “Our goal is to win the endurance race,” said Logan B.

A team from Lehigh Career & Technical Institute was recently named the winner in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s first Penn College Web Competition. High schools were invited to bring teams of two to four students to Penn College’s campus on April 20, where they were provided text and images and tasked with developing a small website, with all code created by the competitors.

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Penn College NOW dual-enrollment program – which provided $2.7 million of college credits free to Pennsylvania high school students in 2016-17 – received reaccreditation from the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships, the organization announced on May 2.

This tax season, 13 Pennsylvania College of Technology accounting students helped clients file close to 150 federal income tax returns. The free service is part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program sponsored by the IRS. It is designed to help taxpayers who have relatively uncomplicated returns to prepare their returns and file electronically.

Students in the traditional bachelor’s degree nursing major presented their capstone research at the UPMC Susquehanna research symposium, receiving praise from health system staff and administrators. The students are enrolled in the course Research and Theory in Clinical Practice, taught by Joni J. Pyle, assistant professor of nursing at Penn College.

Before closing out the Spring 2018 semester at Penn College with a summary of year-to-date accomplishments, encouraging her audience to take "time to recharge, explore new ideas and new perspectives" over the summer, President Davie Jane Gilmour presided over the morning's Employee Recognition ceremonies.
