The following oped piece, written by President Davie Jane Gilmour, appeared in Feb. 8, 2009, editions of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. There was an uninvited guest at our new-year celebrations in 2009 – it was the growing concern about our economy and our future.
"Introduction to Steel-Joist Products," a free presentation by a civil engineer, will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium. The presenter will be Kevin W. Smith, engineering manager of CMC Joist and Deck, New Columbia, a division of Commercial Metals Co.
The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will host "Beauty, Vulnerability and Inevitability," a collection of paintings by Ed Wong-Ligda, from Feb. 10 to March 6. This exhibit comprises three separate but related bodies of work that examine beauty, vulnerability and the inevitability of change.

A concert scheduled for Feb. 15 in The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, has been postponed. Because of a hand injury suffered by classical guitarist and Penn College alumnus Alphonse Ciaccio, the concert he was to perform will be postponed until fall.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board again has awarded an $11,500 grant to Pennsylvania College of Technology to help prevent underage and high-risk alcohol use by students. The maximum PLCB grant, part of $700,000 in funds awarded to 68 organizations statewide, will be used for a variety of outreach programs to reduce alcohol consumption among Penn College students.
Renewing their all-star basketball rivalry against a staff/faculty team Monday, students hit 11 of their first 13 three-pointers on their way to winning the game 67-43 in Bardo Gym. According to a recap by intramural assistant Jeremy R. Bottorf, the staff/faculty team (led by Gallahad Mallery and Jim Williams Jr.) mounted a small comeback to start the second half.
