WNEP-TV’s Mackenzie Aucker visited campus to report on Penn College business & hospitality students who will head to Churchill Downs on Monday, April 28, to complete Derby Week internships. Their workweek will culminate with the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby.
The report , which aired Monday evening, featured interviews with baking & pastry arts students Steven R. Penley, of Chambersburg, and Emma E. DelCampo, of West Chester, as well as Chef Charles R. Niedermyer, instructor of baking and pastry arts/culinary arts, who will accompany students to the event for the 16th time next week.
Penn College has supplemented the Derby culinary crew more than 30 times. While there, students work alongside chefs from across the country and gain experience in “high volume” service as they prepare tons of food to feed the thousands of guests who visit Churchill Downs’ premium venues during Derby Week. The Derby itself draws a crowd of over 150,000 spectators.
