Four Penn College teams combine for 12-0 week

Four Pennsylvania College of Technology spring sports teams sported perfect records over the past week: the baseball and softball teams were both 4-0, and the men’s lacrosse and women’s tennis teams were 2-0.

Baseball
Using a 19-hit attack, the Wildcats scored in each of the first six innings Tuesday against King’s College en route to a 15-4 victory. Jaydon Goebel of Honey Brook led the offense, going 4 for 4, including two doubles, with four RBIs and three runs scored. Weston McClain of Port Matilda, the second of six Wildcats pitchers, got the win.

In United East play on Saturday, hosting Penn State Berks, Penn College won 19-2 in seven innings and 7-6. In the opener, Dallas Griess of Williamsport went 5 for 6 with five RBIs, while Goebel and Levi Purnell of Snow Shoe each had three hits and plated four and three runs, respectively, and Shawn Townsend of Hatboro added two hits, including a dinger and three RBIs. On the mound, Griffin Vollman of Williamsport went five innings to improve to 2-1. In the second game, the Wildcats overcame an early 5-1 deficit with a four-run third inning and scored the eventual game-winner on an RBI single in the seventh by Ethan Stahl of Cogan Station. Nathan Gustkey of Philipsburg had four hits. Sam Staib of Bloomsburg got the win in relief.

On Sunday at St. Elizabeth, the Wildcats won 14-8 to complete a 4-0 week and up their win streak to five. Townsend was 4 for 5 with three RBIs, Goebel knocked in three runs and Griess went 3 for 3 with four runs scored.

Softball
Hosting crosstown rival Lycoming College on Thursday, Penn College took both games and extended its win streak to eight. In the first contest, a single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning by pitcher Mackenzie Weaver of Montoursville lifted the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory and also gave Weaver her ninth win of the season with a two-hit, five-strikeout effort. In the nightcap, Penn College scored all of its runs in the sixth inning in a 6-5 win as pitcher Mackenzi Tice of Mansfield was 2 for 3 at the plate with a three-run triple while also striking out eight for her fifth win. The sweep narrowed Lycoming’s lead in the series to 8-5.

Getting its United East season underway on Saturday at home, the Wildcats took both games by scores of 5-1 and 5-4 in 11 innings to hike their win streak to 10. In the first game, Weaver improved to 10-3 in the circle, fanning five. Weaver again led the offense by going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. In the bottom of the 11th inning of the second game, Madison Herriman of Danville was placed on second base, advanced to third on Weaver’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch to complete the sweep. Tice struck out eight in relief of Weaver, picking up her sixth win in the circle. During the first four innings, Weaver struck out four and surpassed 500 career strikeouts.

Earlier in the week, Weaver and Tice swept the UE Player and Pitcher of the Week honors. Weaver collected her third weekly honor and her first time Player of the Week, while Tice was named the Pitcher of the Week for the first time.

Men’s Lacrosse
Owen Kupsey of Chadds Ford scored four goals as the Wildcats topped Alvernia University 8-3 on Wednesday. Ryan Twist of Great Meadows, New Jersey, made 17 saves in the goal.

Hosting first-time foe Neumann University on Saturday, Penn College won 21-6 to complete a 2-0 week. Kupsey had another four-goal game with one assist, and AJ Dotson of Wilmington, Delaware, had three goals and three assists.

Men’s Golf
Penn College placed 10th in a 17-team field with a 619 total over the weekend in the spring season-opening Pennsylvania Classic on Penn State’s Blue Course. Individually, Peyton Mussina of Montoursville recorded a 73-75—148 to tie for 13th among 94 players.

Also for Penn College, Gunner Redmond of Lock Haven shot 81-73—154 and tied for 34th, Brady Handy of Huntingdon shot 79-79—158 and tied for 47th, Will Orwig of Mifflintown shot 80-79—159 and tied for 52nd, and Logan Gawlinski of Kittanning shot 84-80—164 and was 61st. Only the low four scores count toward the team total.

Women’s Tennis
Opening UE play on Wednesday, Penn College won all six singles and all three doubles matches in a 7-0 win over Bryn Athyn. Singles winners were Ellen Buckley of Binghamton, New York, at No. 1, Faith Murray of Dillsburg at No. 2, Kayla Weinzierl of Summer Hills at No. 3, Cierra Miller of Dover at No. 4, Callistra Mahoney of Williamsport at No. 5 and Eliza Welshans of Jersey Shore at No. 6. Winning doubles teams were Buckley-Murray at No. 1, Weinzierl-Miller at No. 2 and Welshans-Mahoney at No. 3.

On Saturday at Penn State Berks in UE action, Penn College won 5-2. Singles winners were Buckley at No. 1, Lauren Peck of South Williamsport at No. 2, Murray at No. 3, and Welshans at No. 4. Doubles winners were Buckley-Peck at No. 1, Murray-Weinzierl at No. 3, and Miller-Welshans at No. 3.
