With a two-victory week that extended its win streak to five games, the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s basketball team moved into rare company. Also, three wrestlers reached the podium at the Wilkes Open.
This week, while other teams enjoy the holiday and semester break, the men’s basketball squad opts for warmer weather as it competes Saturday and Sunday in the Florida Sunshine Shootout at Daytona Beach, Florida.
Women’s Basketball
After playing to a 49-all stalemate through regulation time, the Wildcats dominated in overtime with a 9-0 run that produced a 58-49 home win Monday over Centenary University. Gigi Parlante of Williamsport led three Penn College players scoring in double figures with 15 points — including a 3-point shot that sent the game into OT — while Rachel Teats of Middleburg and Lexi Troup of Huntingdon both scored 13.
Back in action one night later against Alfred State to close out its nonconference schedule, Penn College extended its win streak to five games — a program first during the NCAA era since 2014 — with a 69-55 victory to even its overall record at 6-6. Teats scored 18 points, Kenni Galbreath of Shrewsburg tallied 15, and Parlante had her eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
From a historical perspective, the last time a Penn College women’s team won five consecutive games was during the 2009-10 season. Before that, it was accomplished once in 2007-08. Its longest win streak this century came at the end of the 2005-06 campaign when it won its last six games to close out a 19-8 season and capture the Penn State University Athletic Conference championship. Earlier that same season, the Wildcats had two five-game win streaks.
