Wrestling, basketball, soccer players stand out

The Pennsylvania College of Technology wrestling team had a great outing, the men’s and women’s basketball teams stayed unbeaten in United East Conference play, and several soccer players were awarded postseason honors this past week.

Wrestling
Penn College placed second in a 12-team field and had one individual champion in Carter Davis on Saturday in the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic.

Davis of York, a freshman, captured the 165-pound championship with a perfect 5-0 day that included three falls.

Also for the Wildcats, Blake Dergham of Slatington (2-1 on the day) was third at 133; Justin Adams of York (3-2 with three falls), CJ Trimber of Moon Township (2-1) and Nicholas Woodruff of Wyalusing (2-1) were fourth at 125, 133 and 197, respectively; Isaac McGregor of Northumberland (4-1 with three falls) was fifth at 141; TJ Martin of Honesdale (5-1 with five falls) and Cavin Napoletano of Killingworth, Connecticut, (4-2 with one fall) were sixth at 149 and 157, respectively; and Gavin Gomes of Denville, New Jersey, (4-2 with one fall at 157) and Cole Shupp of Danville (2-2 with one fall at 174) both finished eighth.

Wilkes University led the way with 194 points and was followed by Penn College 132, Elizabethtown 131, Roanoke College 130.5, Cortland State 122.5, Ferrum 117, McDaniel 90, Johns Hopkins 87.5, Davis and Elkins 51, Scranton 26.5, Keystone College 18 and Elmira College 4.5.

Men’s Basketball
When you’re hot, you’re hot, and Alfred University, after falling behind the Wildcats 9-6 in the first half of Tuesday’s game, used 10 3-point goals over the next 15:25 to build a 13-point halftime lead and went on for an 89-76 win. Both teams had 30-point scorers as Gavin Barrett of Roselle, New Jersey, scored 33 for Penn College, marking the fifth time during his career he has reached that mark, and Amoi Charles had 32 for Alfred.

In United East action on Saturday at home with Gallaudet University, Penn College won 85-78 to take a 9-8 lead in the series. Donnie Brass Briscoe of Alexandria, Virginia, led the offense with 16 points, while Livingston Cross of Union, New Jersey, had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Barrett a double-double with 12 points and 13 assists.

Women’s Basketball
Hosting Gallaudet University in UE play on Saturday in its only game of the week, Gigi Parlante of Williamsport scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds, and Emily Pardee of Williamsport had 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 66-59 win.

Also, Parlante secured her second UE weekly award as the league announced the freshman forward as the Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Parlante was previously named the UE Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 11. In her team’s Nov. 26, 62-55 win over Lancaster Bible, Parlante netted 18 points, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and dished out a game-best eight assists. Twelve of her rebounds came on the defensive end, where she also swiped three passes and blocked a shot.

Women’s Soccer
A program record four Wildcats were named to the 2024 United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Region IV Team, the organization announced on Tuesday. Freshman forward Megan Kurian of Royersford landed on the second team, while senior goalkeeper Nicole Lichtinger of Erie, senior midfielder Cassie Johnson of Richland and freshman defender Ashley Gordon of Pottstown were named to the third team.

Men’s Soccer
Senior defender Tommy DeGeyter of Long Valley, New Jersey, was named to the United Soccer Coaches Division III Region IV second team, it was announced Tuesday. DeGeyter capped a decorated career by becoming the first player in program history of the NCAA era (since 2014) to earn an all-region selection.
