Two Penn College employees were honored as nominees in Northcentral PA YWCA's 16th annual Women of Excellence Award Ceremony, held recently at the Community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport.

Tanya Berfield, director of student advocacy and Title IX coordinator, and Angela L. Stackhouse, head coach of softball, were among 21 Women of Excellence nominees.

Recognized in the advocacy category, Berfield's nomination noted how her professional role aligns with YWCA's mission and values, supporting students experiencing a range of challenges, including housing and food insecurity, domestic or sexual violence and harassment, and veteran-student needs. "She serves as the primary investigator for issues of discrimination based on race or other protected classes, a committed educator on all things inclusivity and equity, and she assumes responsibility for maintaining a safe environment for all campus community members, especially those more likely to experience discrimination and violence," her nominator wrote.

In addition to her professional support of Penn College students undergoing hardship, Berfield continues her advocacy in her personal life, working to empower and coach others, particularly women, in health, wellness, personal growth and success.

Stackhouse was among those nominated in the sports category. Her nomination stated: "Angie cares deeply about her student-athletes, staff members and colleagues. She excels in having the abilities to communicate with her student-athletes, works proactively in the work environment and forges strong rapports with everyone she comes in contact with."

Stackhouse has guided the Penn College softball program to new heights, capturing the United East Conference Championship and advancing to the NCAA tournament twice in her five-year career at the helm. In addition to their success on the field, the team is active in the community, volunteering in community clean-ups and writing letters to active-duty service members through "Holidays for Heroes."

In addition to the Women of Excellence nominees in seven categories, the evening recognized 14 Young Ladies of Excellence.

The annual ceremony "honors inspiring women and young ladies who uplift communities through their hard work and dedication," according to the YWCA program. "The Women of Excellence Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of women and young ladies who have excelled in their fields, demonstrated academic excellence and made significant contributions to their communities."
