A Pennsylvania College of Technology information technology professor addressed a recent national conference for IT educators.
Sandra Gorka, professor of computer information technology, presented at SIGITE 2024, the Association for Computing Machinery’s 25th annual conference on information technology education. Held in El Paso, Texas, the gathering focused on the interplay between emerging technologies and the incorporation of artificial intelligence-based tools in education strategies and instruction.
A veteran presenter at SIGITE conferences, Gorka was part of a four-person panel discussion titled “AI, Security and Society: Lessons From CS 2023 for Information Technology Education.” CS 2023 is the most recent version of computer science curricular guidelines.
The 60-minute presentation focused on lessons learned from CS 2023 that can be applied to the next IT curricular guidelines update. Gorka covered security aspects of CS 2023 that are relevant for an IT education. She discussed the increasing need for security in all aspects of computing and the importance of nurturing and mentoring IT students to help them develop a security mindset.
Gorka has taught at Penn College since 1997. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Shippensburg University, an additional master’s in mathematics from the University of Delaware, and a doctorate in mathematics, also from the University of Delaware.
