Penn College golf, soccer teams stand out

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s men’s golf team dominated the United East Fall Preview and its soccer teams went a combined 3-0 last week.

Men’s Golf
For the third year in a row, the men’s golf team finished at the top and Peyton Mussina of Montoursville medaled in the United East Fall Preview on Monday. Mussina led a field of 36 players with a 1-over 74 on the par 73, 6,962-yard Chambersburg Country Club black course and the Wildcats topped a seven-team field with a score of 320, nine strokes better than second-place Penn State Harrisburg.

Men’s Soccer
Penn College built a 3-1 lead through 87 minutes and held on at the end for a 3-2 UE win at first-time opponent Notre Dame (Md.) University on Saturday. Tommy DeGeyter of Long Valley, New Jersey, had a goal and an assist, and goalie Cole Catherman of Selinsgrove made four saves.

Women’s Soccer
At first-time opponent Cedar Crest College on Tuesday, the Wildcats got goals from Wiley Egan of Northumberland and Megan Kurian of Royersford, along with a defensive effort that allowed just two shots on goal and a pair of saves by goalie Morgan Solano of Shavertown in a 2-0 win.

Kurian’s 16th goal of the season also set a modern (since 2014) freshman scoring record as the team extended its unbeaten streak to a program-record (since 2001) 13 straight (9-0-4), bettering the previous mark of 11 set last year when it started 6-0-5.

In UE play on Saturday at first-time foe Notre Dame (Md.) University, Penn College stayed unbeaten through 14 matches with a 5-0 win as Egan and Kurian both scored twice and the defense held Notre Dame to one shot on goal, with goalkeeper Nicole Lichtinger of Erie making one save.

Men’s/Women’s Cross-Country
Penn College teams both finished ninth at the DeSales University Invitational on Saturday. Mitchell Campbell of Riegelsville led the men over an 8K course with a time of 28:10.1 and placed 34th in a field of 180 as the team ended with 247 points in a field of 16. Elaina Brady of McConnellsburg led the women with a 52nd-place finish in 27:44.8 over a 6K course in a field of 147 as the team ended with 275 points in a field of 13. Matthew Woolcock of Oil City, who has led the men in three races this season, was rested in preparation for the United East Championships hosted by St. Mary’s (Md.) College on Nov. 2.

Women’s Volleyball
In a 3-0 UE home loss to Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday, leaders were Nevaeh Ward of Overton, Maryland, with 13 digs and nine kills, and Jo Hess of Jersey Shore with 14 assists.

At Bryn Athyn in UE play on Saturday, the Wildcats lost a tough four-setter, 3-1. Leaders included Ward with 24 digs and 13 kills and Hess with 25 assists.

Men’s/Women’s Tennis
On Tuesday in a match rescheduled from September, the women’s tennis team closed out its fall season with a 7-0 loss to crosstown rival Lycoming College. In the most competitive matches for the Wildcats, Faith Murray of Dillsburg lost at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 3-6, and Gwynn Johnson of Staunton, Virginia, lost at No. 6 singles, 2-6, 4-6. Murray was 4-1 in singles for the fall.

On Friday, the men’s team wrapped up its fall season at Juniata College with a 6-1 loss. Logan Ogden of South Williamsport earned the lone victory with a 6-4, 4-6 (10-6 tiebreaker) win at No. 4 singles to finish with a 3-1 record. The Wildcats’ No. 1 doubles team of Alex Norris of Williamsport-John Finnegan of Hughesville also won its match, 6-2. Others in competitive matches were Jayden Manbeck of Bethel at No. 3 singles, a 4-6, 3-6 loss, and Ogden-Manbeck at No. 3 doubles, a 6-6, 1-7 tiebreaker loss.
