Penn College women’s volleyball gets key win

When the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s volleyball team opened its United East season on Tuesday, it was significant in more ways than one. Not only did the Wildcats begin conference play with a victory for the first time since 2013, they snapped a 46-match UE losing streak dating to October 2017 and ended a seven-match loss string this season.

Women’s Volleyball
In the team’s 3-1 win at first-time foe Rosemont College, Ava Harple of Downingtown had 12 kills, Nevaeh Ward of Odenton, Maryland, had seven aces, Laney Wolfe of Ford City had 11 digs, Jo Hess of Jersey Shore had 24 assists and Lana Howard of Liberty, New Jersey, had one block to lead Penn College. Of the five, Hess is a senior and the others are freshmen on rookie coach Kyle Hawk’s team.

Ending the week in UE action on Saturday, Penn College lost 3-0. Statistical leaders included Wolfe with 13 digs, Hess with 11 assists and Ward with 10 kills.

Women’s Soccer
On Wednesday at Penn State Abington, Penn College extended its unbeaten streak to 11 as the teams fought to a 0-0 UE draw. The Wildcats led in shots on goal, 4-2. Nicole Lichtinger of Erie made two saves in goal.

Hosting Rosemont College in a UE match on Saturday, Penn College not only posted its first-ever win over Rosemont, 6-0, but upped its unbeaten string to 12 in the process. Megan Kurian of Royersford and Rylee Oliphant of Red Lion both scored twice, Olivia Casella of South Williamsport and Wiley Egan of Northumberland both had two assists, and Lichtinger recorded her seventh shutout of the season in goal with one save and lowered her goals against average to 0.11.

Men’s Soccer
In a UE series since 2014 where final scores have always been close, the Wildcats fell to 0-9-2 lifetime against Penn State Abington on Wednesday when they lost a heart-breaker, 1-0, as Abington scored in the 66th minute on a header off a corner kick. Abington led in shots on goal 5-1.

At home in UE play against Gallaudet University on Saturday, Penn College won 7-1, with seven players in on the scoring and Tommy DeGeyter of Long Valley, New Jersey, picking up two assists. The Wildcats’ defense limited Gallaudet to one shot on goal.

Men’s Golf
Gunner Redmond of Lock Haven and Brady Handy of Huntingdon shot 82 and tied for 30th to lead five Penn College golfers in the Drew Birdie Bash as the Wildcats finished ninth among 12 teams at the Flanders Valley Golf Course on Wednesday with a 338 total.

Men’s/Women’s Tennis
On Friday, the women’s tennis team lost a nonconference match at Penn State Altoona, 6-1, with Faith Murray of Dillsburg earning the lone win at No. 3 singles and improving to 4-0.

Saturday’s scheduled fall finale matches against Juniata College were postponed, with a men’s-only match now set for Friday at Juniata.

Also, Ellen Buckley of Binghamton, New York, earned United East Player of the Week honors for Sept. 23-29, the league announced Tuesday. Buckley earned two victories in her return to the court from injury in Friday’s matchup against Kean, one at No. 1 singles and another at No. 1 doubles, marking the second weekly honor of her career.

Men’s/Women’s Cross-Country
Junior Matthew Woolcock of Oil City was named United East Conference Runner of the Week for Sept. 23-29, the league office announced on Tuesday, as he completed the Lock Haven Invitational 8K course with his fastest time of the season in 27:43.4 to finish sixth among all D-III runners and 27th overall in the 180-person field. Woolcock also was the UE ROW on Sept. 10.
