Tuesday, September 24, 2024

Backed by "Accelerated Learning," the drag truck operated by Pennsylvania College of Technology's Diesel Performance Club, team members, alumni and mentors celebrate their trophy-worthy, first-place division win at the Keystone Truckin' Nationals on Saturday. Attracting thousands of spectators, the event began at 8 a.m., and the excitement dragged into the evening.

"We won! We won!" enthused Mark E. Sones, a faculty adviser for the Diesel Performance Club of Pennsylvania College of Technology. The club's 1959 B-61 Model Mack drag truck, appropriately named "Accelerated Learning," captured first place in the B1-Big Truck fast class division on Saturday at the Keystone Truckin' Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading.

That victory qualified the Penn College vehicle to compete in the final round of the daylong competition. Called the "King of the Hill," the grand finale pits the top five trucks (from five divisions) against each other. "Accelerated Learning" missed first place by a slim margin, but the team was elated with second.

"Many thanks to the 60-plus Penn College students and alumni in attendance who jumped in as crew or just cheered us on," Sones added. "It was a great day for us all and a great showcase of the abilities of our Penn College students!"
