Two Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams — women’s volleyball and men’s soccer — were double winners this past week.
Women’s Volleyball
In a five-match series first dating to 2013, the Wildcats bested Penn State Mont Alto 3-1 on Monday in posting handing first-year coach Kyle Hawk his initial victory. Among the individual leaders were Nevaeh Ward of Odenton, Maryland, with 17 digs and 16 kills; Kathryn Burnett of Wellsboro, with 40 assists and 14 digs; and Hailey DeBrody of Cogan Station with 15 kills. The win avenged a 3-0 loss to Mont Alto on Aug. 31 and snapped a two-season, 14-match losing streak.
On Tuesday at first-time opponent Penn State Allegheny, Penn College lost, 3-1. Ward had 14 kills and seven blocks, Burnett had 24 assists and DeBrody had 15 digs.
In a tri-match on Friday against two first-time opponents at John Jay College, Penn College opened with a 3-0 win over SUNY Old Westbury and lost 3-0 to the host team. Against Old Westbury, Ward had seven kills and nine aces, Burnett had 17 assists and Jo Hess of Jersey Shore had 12 digs. Against John Jay, Burnett had 11 assists and Hess had 10 digs.

Men’s Soccer
The Wildcats used a seven-goal first half en route to an 8-0 win over first-time foe Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday. Scott Goldfeder of Mechanicsburg scored twice to pace the offense and the Penn College defense held Schuylkill to one shot on goal.
On Saturday at St. Vincent College, the match ended in a 1-1 tie as Logan Stapleton of Chambersburg scored the lone Penn College goal in the 50th minute and goalie Cole Catherman of Selinsgrove made four saves.
At home on Sunday against Gwynedd Mercy University, Tommy DeGeyter of Long Valley, New Jersey, scored in the 55th minute and Catherman made three stops in goal for a 1-0 win.

Women’s Soccer
Against first-time opponent Thiel College on Wednesday, Penn College won, 8-0. Olivia Casella of South Williamsport scored three times and added an assist, while Cassie Johnson of Richland tallied twice and Megan Kurian of Royersford had one goal and four assists. Goalie Nicole Lichtinger of Erie made two saves.
Hosting St. Vincent College on Saturday, Penn College was outdone in shots on goal, 8-4, but Casella scored just 2:14 into the match and Lichtinger was outstanding in goal as the teams fought to a 1-1 draw as the Wildcats stayed unbeaten in five outings in the young season.

Men’s/Women’s Cross-Country
The men’s and women’s teams both placed third in Saturday’s Misericordia University Cougar Classic cross-country races.
Mitchell Campbell of Riegelsville led the men with an eighth-place finish over an 8K course in 29:04 and Elina Brady of McConnellsburg finished ninth in 28:53 over a 6K course to lead the Penn College women.
Also, Matthew Woolcock of Oil City was named the United East Runner of the Week for Sept. 2-8 after he won the season-opening race against Lycoming College on Sept. 3 and then led the men’s team in the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen Invitational on Sept. 7.

Men’s Golf
Paced by the individual fourth-place finish of Peyton Mussina of Montoursville, Penn College finished fourth among 16 teams on Monday at the Albright College Fall Invitational. Mussina’s 2-over 74 was just one shot behind three others who took top honors in an 80-player field.

Men’s/Women’s Tennis
Other than one doubles match win, Penn College found the going rough over the weekend in the King’s College Invitational as the duo of Hunter Knosky of Camp Hill-Will Long of Virginia Beach, Virginia, won their opening match and found themselves in a tiebreaker in their second match when, according to coach David Straub, “Hunter began to cramp up and they had to forfeit.
“Several guys did get tough draws for a first round, but luck of the draw was just how the tournament was set up. Good news: the guys are even more determined to work on and improve their games!”
