SOFTBALL
Hosting Penn State Harrisburg in its United East opener on Wednesday, the Wildcats won the opener 5-4 in dramatic fashion and took the second 3-1.
In the first game, Penn College pitcher Mackenzie Weaver of Montoursville closed out the top of the seventh inning after Harrisburg had scored twice to take a 4-2 lead by recording her 12th strikeout of the day and the 333rd of her career to become the college’s all-time leader.
In the bottom half of the frame, on an otherwise overcast afternoon, sunshine broke through briefly as Weaver stepped to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. And in storybook fashion, she delivered with a three-run, walk-off triple for the win.
In the second game, Grace Lorson of Jersey Shore had a two-run double in the fifth inning to key the victory and make a mound winner of Fayth Anderson of Lykens, who struck out eight and walked two.
At Penn State Abington on Saturday, Penn College stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 5-0, 9-1 sweep to complete a perfect 4-0 week.
In the first game, Weaver twirled a no-hitter, fanning two. Lexi Snyder of Hegins drove in two runs, and Lorson went 3 for 4 at the plate, with two runs scored.
In the second game, Anderson improved to 4-1 on the mound with a four-hitter as she struck out eight and walked one. Margaret Mangene of Boalsburg went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, while Snyder and Madison Harriman of Danville each plated two runs.
