Some members of Penn College’s Baja SAE team didn’t have class on Friday afternoon, but they were still studious, working on elements of their car. Nick J. Benninger, of Bloomsburg; Casey B. Campbell, of Kennerdell; Leo W. Cooke, of Easton; and Chethan C. Meda, of Corning, New York; split their time between designing and machining inside the Larry A. Ward Machining Technologies Center.
Penn College is hosting Baja SAE Williamsport, set for May 16-19 at the college’s Heavy Construction Equipment Operations Site in Brady Township. One hundred collegiate teams from 31 states, the District of Columbia, Brazil, Canada and India have registered for the competition.
Baja SAE requires teams to design, manufacture and build a single-seat, off-road vehicle to survive various challenges, including a four-hour endurance event, the competition’s toughest test. Since 2011, Penn College has earned 14 top-10 finishes in the endurance race, including two wins.
