Wildcat men cagers, wrestlers get two wins; Barrett tops 1,000

The Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s basketball and wrestling teams had two-win weeks, and the men’s hoops team saw one of its players reach a scoring milestone.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
On Tuesday, the Wildcats snapped a seven-game loss string and recorded just their third win in 15 conference meetings against Penn State Abington, 94-83. Livingston Cross, of Union, New Jersey, led five players scoring in double figures with 24 points, and he pulled down 11 rebounds, while teammate Gavin Barrett, of Roselle, New Jersey, scored 19 points (upping his career total to 990) and handed out 10 assists. Penn College dominated points in the paint, 54-32.

Barrett became the ninth Wildcat to top the 1,000-point career scoring mark – he now has 1,008 – with an 18-point, 11-assist effort during the team’s 85-71 home win over Gallaudet University on Saturday. Also, for Penn College, Cross scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds. Penn College led in points in the paint, 46-28.

WRESTLING
Penn College went 2-1 at the Case Western Reserve University Dr. Si Ostrach Duals on Saturday in Cleveland, Ohio.

After an opening 32-12 loss to Albion College, the Wildcats rebounded with wins over Hiram College, 59-0, and Waynesburg University, 32-18. Albion and Hiram were first-time opponents, and Penn College is 2-0 lifetime against Waynesburg.

Three Wildcats went 3-0 on the day – Kaden Ware, of Brooklyn, Connecticut, at 133 pounds, with a decision and two wins by forfeit; Noah Hunt, of Muncy, at 141, with three falls – including being down 14-1 before rallying to tie the match and then pinning NCAA D-III Central Region’s eighth-ranked Austin Matheney, of Albion; and Travis Green, of Manchester, Maryland, at 165, with a decision, technical fall and a major decision.

In the most recent rankings of the National Coaches Wrestling Association, Penn College dropped out of the Division III Tournament Team Rankings after two weeks, tied at 24. Meanwhile, 184-pounder Isaac Cory, of Montoursville, sidelined in recent weeks, dropped out of the rankings both nationally, where he had been third since the preseason, and in the Mideast Regional Ranking, where he had been first since the preseason.

Also in the Mideast, Hunt stayed third at 141, Ware (133) and TJ Martin, of Honesdale (149) both remained seventh, and Nicholai Brotzman, of Marietta (285) dropped from sixth to eighth, while Green (165) and Cade Schneck, of Pine Grove (174), dropped out after being eighth.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Despite a 21-point, 10-rebound effort from Rachel Teats, of Middleburg, Penn College saw an eight-point halftime lead disappear in the second half as it dropped a 68-57 UE decision to Penn State Abington on Tuesday. Abington led in points off turnovers, 36-8.

Hosting Gallaudet University on Saturday, the Wildcats fell, 71-57. Teats led the offense with 17 points.
