All three Pennsylvania College of Technology winter sports teams saw action last week, with the wrestling squad coming away with the lone victory.
WRESTLING
On Saturday at the Messiah University Chocolate Duals, the Wildcats went 1-2, losing to team tournament eighth-ranked Johnson and Wales, 42-9, and Shenandoah, 25-24, and topping Ohio Wesleyan, 31-15.
TJ Martin, of Honesdale, went 3-0 on the day at 149 pounds with a win by fall, a major decision and a forfeit. Going 2-1 for Penn College were Luke Heimbach, of Boyertown, at 125; Kaden Ware, of Brooklyn, Connecticut, at 133; and Nicholai Brotzman, of Marietta, at 285. Martin and Patrick Snoke, of Northampton, who finished 1-1 at 141, both posted wins over regionally ranked opponents.
One day earlier, a program-record seven Wildcats made the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Mideast Region rankings.
Isaac Cory, of Montoursville, a sophomore, remained third nationally and No. 1 in the region at 184 in the season’s third poll, while junior Noah Hunt, of Muncy, went from second to third at 141; Martin, a freshman, went from fifth to seventh at 149; and Ware, a freshman, went from sixth to seventh at 149. Making their debuts in the ranking are freshmen Brotzman, sixth at 285; Travis Green, of Manchester, Maryland, eighth at 165; and Cade Schneck, of Pine Grove, eighth at 174.
The seven ranked wrestlers are tied for the second-most in the region with Elizabethtown, 23rd-ranked Ithaca and just behind ninth-ranked The College of New Jersey’s 10.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
At Elmira College on Monday, the home team outscored the Wildcats in each half en route to a 103-90 win. Livingston Cross, of Union, New Jersey, led Penn College with a team-high 31 points and 13 rebounds. Cross’s 30-plus-point effort put him in elite company with just nine other Wildcat men who have reached that mark this century. Also recording a double-double was Max Jackowsky, of Garnet Valley, with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
On Wednesday, for the second game in a row, Penn College scored at least 90 points but lost, this time to King’s College, 100-94. Gavin Barrett, of Roselle, New Jersey, led the Wildcats with 21 points and 14 assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Playing back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday, Penn College first lost at first-time foe Centenary University, 77-50, and fell at home to York College, 68-40.
Against Centenary, the home team held the upper hand in every quarter and had a 35-21 edge in field goals for the game. Rachel Teats, of Middleburg, and Lexi Troup, of Huntingdon, both scored 12 points for the Wildcats.
Against York College, another first-time opponent, Penn College was outscored 39-12 in the two middle periods after leading by three after the first quarter. Troup led the Wildcats with 11 points and seven rebounds.

ACADEMICS
Women’s volleyball – Seniors Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, and Maggie Mangene, of Boalsburg, and junior Hailey DeBrody, of Cogan Station, were named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Division III Team announced on Tuesday.
Student-athletes selected to the 2023 Academic All-District Team must be at least a sophomore or above, maintain a 3.50 GPA or higher and have competed in 90% of the institution’s contests or have started in 66% of the contests. The teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
