Four Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams will be in the hunt for championships when United East Conference postseason playoff action begins on Saturday.
The men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete in the UE Championships at Cairn University, while the men’s and once-beaten women’s soccer teams await word on who they will face and where their first-round matches in the conference’s Volt Division will be, also on Saturday.
This year’s expanded playoff format from four to the top six teams in both the Volt and Skye divisions comes as a result of the merger over the summer of the United East and Colonial States Athletic conferences.
Penn College playoff previews will be released in the coming days.
MEN’S SOCCER
At Gallaudet University in UE action on Friday, Nathan Schwartz, of Lancaster, led eight Wildcats who scored with a pair of goals in a 9-0 rout. Penn College led in shots on goal, 15-2, with Justin Potts, of Media, and Cole Catherman, of Selinsgrove, splitting duties in the goal and each making one save.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Kaelynn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, scored a goal and assisted on two others in a 4-0 nonconference win against Keuka College on Wednesday as the Wildcats took a 5-4-1 lead in the series between the two schools. Also, Cassie Johnson, of Richland, had an assist to become the program’s all-time leader in that category with 24, and goalie Nicole Lichtinger, of Erie, had six saves on the day.
The team’s 9-1-7 season, thus far, is its best since it finished 9-1 and captured the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Championship in 2006.
Closing out its regular season on Friday in UE play at Gallaudet University, Sheetz tallied three goals and added an assist in a 10-1 victory that gave the program its first double-digit win season since 2019 when it finished 10-9-1 and only the fourth time in program history – the others came in 2018 (12-8), 2016 (11-9-2) and 2013 (10-7-3).

MEN’S/WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
In its final competitive tune-up before the UE Championships, Penn College split with crosstown rival Lycoming College on Monday, with the Wildcat men winning, 16-46, and the women losing, 18-43. Wildcat Mitch Campbell, of Riegelsville, led the 15-runner men’s field with a time of 29:56 over an 8K course, while Elaina Brady, of Big Cove Tannery, finished third in 27:13 over a 6K course to lead the Penn College women.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Penn College lost 3-0 in a United East women’s volleyball match at Gallaudet University on Monday. Marianna Dariychuk, of Leola, led the Wildcats with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, led with 12 assists.
On Tuesday, Penn College dropped a nonconference match at Penn State Mont Alto, 3-0. Coryn Oswald, of Langhorne, led the Wildcats with 12 digs and Stein led with 10 assists.
With its UE playoff hopes on the line Saturday against a team it never has beaten, Penn College went five sets before falling, 3-2, in a home loss to Penn State Abington. Oswald led Penn College with 16 digs and 14 kills, and Stein led with six aces and 33 assists.

GOLF
Penn College golfers on Tuesday shaved 17 strokes off their first-day total and finished fourth in an eight-team field in the fall season-ending Battle at Bulle Rock Golf Club. After opening with a 331 on Monday, the Wildcats rallied with a 314 on Tuesday for a 645 total.
Peyton Mussina, of Montoursville, had rounds of 80-75 for a 155 total, which tied him for eighth in a field of 39 players. Also, Will Orwig, of Mifflintown, placed 16th with an 82-77–159; Gavin Baer, of Bainbridge, tied for 19th with an 83-79–162; Trevor Keaton, of Worcester, tied for 28th with an 86-83–169; and Sam Wetmiller, of Selinsgrove, was 37th with a 100-85–185.
“It was a great fall season,” coach Rob Lytle said. “We accomplished what we wanted to do, and that was play good tournaments, play good competition.”
In six events, the Wildcats also recorded two first-place finishes, three thirds and a fourth.
“We had some success, which is nice and are building blocks for the spring,” the second-year coach said.
“As far as individuals, Peyton played outstanding this fall. I know, if you asked him, he would probably tell you his season was a B+, but he played well for us,” Lytle continued of the junior who won three events and finished second twice.
“Going down our lineup, Keaton played very well this fall for us. Will has always been a standard in our lineup, as well as Gavin Baer. Those guys have played well. Gunner Redmond, of Lock Haven, stepped up when he needed to, and one of our freshmen, Sam Wetmiller, got a chance to come in and shine for us at the Drew University Birdie Bash,” Lytle said.
“And, we had a chance to bring our second team into the Northeast Elite; the incoming freshmen got a great opportunity to play in a really competitive golf tournament. Overall, the fall was a positive step moving forward,” Lytle said.
Over the offseason, the coach said he’s looking at workout and nutrition programs for his players, along with playing as much as weather permits.
“We’re going to be ready for the spring,” Lytle added.
