Tom Speicher, writer/video producer at Penn College, recently discussed the “A Week With Waffles,” his award-winning children's book, with Fiona Powell for WVIA Radio's "Art Scene" with Erika Funke.
"Waffles the guinea pig will take your children on an exciting but recognizable journey through her week," Powell said at the close of the 13-minute segment, "and is sure to become an animal hero of our youngest generation."
The pair also talk about Waffles' second appearance in print: "A Day With Waffles and Alexis," to be published in October. Following the same interactive, creative-thinking format as its predecessor, the book was inspired by the unexpected May death of Alexis Weisser, the elder daughter of Speicher's partner, Maria.
"Alexis was such a unique character and I thought, 'What a great way to honor her memory than to have a book with her and Waffles doing the type of things that Alexis loved to do," Speicher told his interviewer. "A couple of pages, we have Waffles playing rugby with Alexis. It's going to be a special book."
