Penn College women’s volleyball, soccer teams stand out

Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s volleyball and soccer teams led the way over the past week as both tasted victory for the first time this season.

Women’s volleyball
At crosstown rival Lycoming College on Monday, the Wildcats lost, 3-0. Team leaders were Marianna Dariychuk, of Leola, with 10 kills; Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, with 13 assists; and Maggie Mangene, of Boalsburg, with 10 digs.

Facing first-time foe Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, Penn College posted a 3-0 win – snapping a two-season 18-match losing streak – as Coryn Oswald had eight kills and Stein 19 assists.

The Wildcats closed out a 2-1 week and posted their first back-to-back wins since 2016 with a 3-0 victory on Saturday at Valley Forge University, using a 9-1 start for a 25-7 first-game win and going on from there. Penn College leads in the series, 4-0. Other statistics from the match were not immediately available.

Women’s soccer
In their home opener on Wednesday, the Wildcats were held to three shots on goal by Wilson College, but Penn College goalkeeper Nichole Lichtinger, of Erie, made seven saves in a scoreless draw as it started the season 0-0-3 for the first time and is only the third time since 2001 that it has three ties in a season.

Kaelyn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, scored the match’s lone goal in the 48th minute to give Penn College its first win of the season at first-time foe Elmira College on Saturday. Lichtinger was perfect in the goal with six stops for her second shutout in a row.

Men’s soccer
On Friday, in a weather-delayed first game at the Shenandoah Tournament in Winchester, Virginia, against Southern Virginia University, the teams fought to a 1-1 draw as their lifetime series remained tied at 1-1-1. Logan Stapleton, of Chambersburg, scored eight seconds into the match and the Wildcats led until the 74th minute when Southern Virginia knotted the score. Southern Virginia led in shots on goal, 5-3, and Penn College goalie Justin Potts, of Medina, made four saves.

Facing tournament host Shenandoah University on Saturday, Penn College, limited to one shot on goal, lost 3-0. Goalie Cole Catherman, of Selinsgrove, made seven saves in taking the loss.

Men’s/women’s cross-country
Running on Saturday at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational, the men placed eighth among 19 teams and the women 17th in a field of 21.

Mitchell Campbell, of Riegelsville, finished 25th of 176 over an 8K course in 27:26 to lead the men and Skyelar Splain, of Liverpool, placed 107th of 193 over a 5K course in 23:50 to top the women.

In iRacing action, Austin DeLong, of Pittsburgh, led the college’s team with a fourth-place finish at the CIL College Cup Series Daytona 250 and a 16th at the CIL Formula College West Coast Laguna Seca.
