Penn College Summer Commencement set for Aug. 5

Nearly 150 students have petitioned to graduate from Pennsylvania College of Technology following the Summer 2023 sessions.

A commencement ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Community Arts Center, with 110 students expected to march in the proceedings. The ceremony is for graduates and ticketed guests. A livestream will also be offered on the commencement website.

The student speaker will be Kathryn Ann Plankenhorn, of Montoursville, who will receive a combined Bachelor/Master of Science degree in physician assistant studies. Plankenhorn will also receive the President’s Award for leadership and service to the college and the Physician Assistant Achievement Award.

A Dean’s List student, Plankenhorn served as vice president for the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society chapter on campus and was a member of Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society. She served as treasurer for the Physician Assistant Student Club and was a science tutor in biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology.

Plankenhorn was a member of the women’s cross-country team, a North Eastern Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete, and she served as an ambassador for the Penn College episode of “The College Tour” TV series on Amazon Prime, leading the “Explore Campus and Beyond” segment.

She also participated in various volunteer activities through student organizations, including the Science Festival, Open Houses and community cleanups.

The college will present an Alumni Volunteer of the Year Award to Whitnie-Rae Mays, of Williamsport, who earned a bachelor’s degree in applied technology studies in 2014 and an associate degree in advertising art in 2012. She serves on the Penn College Alumni Board and is a graphic designer and marketing specialist with Lycoming Engines.

President Michael J. Reed will confer degrees upon the graduates. Representing the Penn College Board of Directors will be state Sen. Gene Yaw, board chair.
