A tip of the hat to the college's Derby megastars!

Thursday, May 18, 2023

Nearly two dozen Penn College business and hospitality students made their mark at the 149th running of the storied Kentucky Derby in early May. For the past 30 years, Penn College has been part of that story.

“It was another very successful Derby where the Penn College contingent, both students and alumni, shined,” said Chef Charles R. Niedermyer, instructor of baking and pastry arts and culinary arts, who, with Chef Mike S. Dinan, sous chef for the college’s Le Jeune Chef Restaurant, accompanied and worked alongside students. “Penn College continues to play a critical role in providing the highest quality food and beverage services.”

Students in business and hospitality majors were hired by staff of the Levy Restaurants team that handles hospitality at Churchill Downs, the site of the iconic horse racing event. While there, they staffed the main kitchen, where they prepared tons of ingredients, as well as exclusive, premium venues where some rubbed elbows with celebrities.
