While the fall tennis season came to a close last week for Pennsylvania College of Technology, both the men’s and women’s soccer teams recorded United East victories and cross-country runners looked strong in a race leading to the conference championships.
FLASHBACK
Tennis
A 9-0 loss at Susquehanna University on Monday ended the women’s fall season with an 0-3 record and the men’s team, meanwhile, finished a week earlier. Both teams now await their spring seasons that begins in March.
“We had some very competitive matches from our freshman men this season. They really contributed and earned some wins in their singles matches. The ladies came together and worked as a team but came up short in their matches,” fifth-year coach Jessica Bower said.
“We need to work a little bit more with our doubles lineups in finding key combinations of players and complimenting each other’s style of play,” Bower continued in assessing the short season.
“We are a young team and so any competition is good competition and good experience,” Bower said, adding, “The men were 1-1 with a good tournament experience thrown in there and that was a good start to the 2022-23 season.
“The women had a late start due to a lack of players and once they got started they didn’t win any team matches but they had some competitive individual matches. Their confidence will grow and that will help them in the spring.”
During the offseason, Bower said, “I want the student-athletes to keep playing and keep conditioned, which is difficult in the winter, but many of them go to the gym together so that should be beneficial.
“The program is moving in the right direction. We are building a solid foundation for a roster. The men have seven and we are expecting two to three more men in the spring to join the team, that way we will be able to try more combinations of doubles teams and find the right fit for everyone on the team.
“The ladies will be losing two players so we will need to be on the hunt for a couple of new athletes to fill those empty spots on the roster.”
Cross-country
On Friday, in their final competitive tuneup before the United East Championships on Oct. 29, the Penn College men, paced by Mitchell Campbell, placed second at the Wilkes University Blue and Gold Invitational. Campbell, of Riegelsville, covered the 8K course in 28:19 to finish fourth in a field of 64.
Skyelar Splain, of Liverpool, topped four Penn College women with a 26th-place finish among 58 runners over a 6K course.
