Mitchell CampbellFLASHBACK
Cross-country
Mitchell Campbell, in just his fourth collegiate race, took first place individually and led the Penn College men’s cross-country team to a sixth-place finish at the 15-team Penn State Abington Invitational on Saturday. In doing so, Campbell, a freshman of Riegelsville, paced a field of 119 over an 8K course in 28:02.26. For the women, Skyelar Splain, of Liverpool, finished 36th among 77 over a 6K course in 33:13.32 as Penn College placed seventh in a nine-team field.

Men’s soccer
Penn State Harrisburg outdid Penn College in shots on goal, 11-4, but at the end of the day a first-half goal by Dylan Dailey, of East Stroudsburg, and 10 saves by goalie Cole Catherman, of Selinsgrove, helped the Wildcats to a 1-1 tie with the defending United East champs on Tuesday.

Thursday’s nonconference match at Clarks Summit University produced the week’s second 1-1 tie (the lone Wildcat goal was scored by Tad Shellenberger, of Port Royal. Braeden Eckard, of Danville, made five saves in goal). It was the third tie of the season and the team’s 16th tie in seven seasons under coach Tyler Mensch.

Tommy DeGeyter, of Long Valley, New Jersey, scored one goal and assisted on another in Saturday’s 3-0 UE win over Gallaudet University as Penn College improved to 1-1-1 in the conference and 2-4-3 overall. Catherman was perfect in goal, making three saves.

Women’s soccer
Allowing four second-half goals doomed the Wildcats in Tuesday’s 5-0 UE loss to Penn State Harrisburg as Harrisburg’s ball-control helped it to a 14-0 margin in shots on goal.

In a nonconference match at Penn State Altoona on Wednesday, Brooke Klinger, of Klingerstown, scored the lone Penn College goal and goalie Nichole Lichtinger, of Erie, had eight saves and made it stand up in a 1-1 tie.

Scoring their most goals in a match since the 2018 season, the Wildcats cruised past Gallaudet University on Saturday in UE play, 10-0, while improving to 2-1 in the conference. In a dominant performance, Penn College outshot Gallaudet 52-0 (25-0 on goal), with Egan Wiley, of Northumberland, and Kaelynn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, each netting hat tricks (Sheetz also had two assists) and Cassie Johnson, of Richland, picking up three assists.

Right back in action on Sunday, Penn College blasted Gwynedd Mercy, 9-0, in a nonconference match that saw it improve to 3-5-1 overall. For the second day in a row, Sheetz scored three goals and had two assists, while Sara Darlington, of West Chester, also had a hat trick. Lichtinger was perfect in the goal with two saves as the Wildcats outdid their opponents in shots on goal, 24-2.

Women’s volleyball
Smiles on the faces of Penn College players at the end of the match said it all on Tuesday after they knocked off Keystone College, 25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, for their second victory. It also marked the first time since 2017 that the Wildcats have posted two wins in a season. Individually, Christine Limbert, of Curwensville, had 11 kills; Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, had 33 assists and eight aces; Coryn Oswald, of Langhorne, had eight aces; and Brooke Simmons, of Waterford, had 19 digs.

In Friday’s 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 loss to Albright College that dropped Penn College’s record to 2-6, Stein had 11 assists and Oswald had 12 digs.

Golf
After Sunday’s first round of the two-day Wilson College Fall Invitational on the par 72, 6,905-yard Greencastle Golf Club course, Penn College was fifth among eight teams with a 314 total. Franklin and Marshall and Dickinson College shared the lead at 292. Individually for the Wildcats, Peyton Mussina, of Montoursville, led the way with a 75, good for 12th place, and Will Orwig, of Mifflintown, was close behind after shooting a 77 and was tied for 15th.

Men’s tennis
At the King’s College Invitational, Paul Langbein, of Carnegie, won his Saturday No. 1 singles match and advanced to Sunday’s semifinal where he lost to Susquehanna University’s top player, 6-4, 6-1. Wildcats losing on Saturday, but competitive in their matches, were Kyle Shuler, of Williamsport, at No. 2 singles in a second-set tiebreaker; and Langbein-Shuler at No. 1 doubles, 8-5.

Esports
“The (Rocket League) team started the season with a big win against the University of Southern Mississippi, winning three matches in a best of five,” coach Joshua Young said of Monday’s season opener. Alex Nazarchuk, of Lebanon, had four goals on 17 shots, and Joey LaCerra, of Loyalsock Township, had five assists.
