Penn College winter sports teams see action

Over the past week, Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s and women’s basketball, and wrestling teams all saw action with no interruptions.



Wrestling
Hosting the Mid-Winter Classic at Liberty Arena on Saturday, Penn College went 1-3 with a win over Thaddeus Stevens College, 48-6, and losses to The University of Scranton, 37-12, Elizabethtown College, 41-9, and Muhlenberg College, 40-9, in its first action since Dec. 20 to drop to 3-6.

Individually for Penn College, Noah Hunt, of Muncy, went 4-0 at 141 and 149 pounds with three falls and a win by forfeit, while Ryan Berstler, of Middletown, was 3-1 with one fall at 125 and Colin Jens, of Centreville, Maryland, was 2-1 at 149 and 141.

Teamwise, New York University finished 4-0; Centenary (N.J.) College was 3-1; Elizabethtown, Muhlenberg, Rhode Island College and Scranton all went 2-2; and Thaddeus Stevens was 0-4.

Men’s basketball
Back in United East Conference play for the first time in more than a month, Penn College posted an 82-65 win at Penn State Abington on Tuesday, snapping a three-game loss string. A 19-3 first-half run and 15-4 start in the second half put the Wildcats in a position to improve to 2-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Max Jackowsky, of Garnet Valley, and Corey Blackwell, of Hammonton, New Jersey, scored 15 points each to lead Penn College. In his debut as a Wildcat, Nouhamadou Diallo, a 6-foot, 5-inch freshman from Stafford, Virginia, who joined the team this semester, scored seven points.

After a tightly played first half on Friday, UEC unbeaten Penn State Harrisburg held Penn College in check during the second half en route to a 92-74 win. Penn College now is 2-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Penn College led by as many as eight in the first half but the Lions took advantage of a 10-0 run to lead 49-47 at the break. Harrisburg started the second half with an 18-2 run and opened its largest lead of 26 points at 82-56 with 8:28 remaining. Jesse White, of Harrisburg, led Penn College in both scoring and rebounding with 19 and 10, respectively.

Women’s basketball
In UEC action at Penn State Abington on Tuesday, the teams battled on even terms through three quarters as the score stood tied at 52. But in the fourth, Abington outscored the Wildcats 17-8 — 13-4 over the final 6:30 — for a 69-60 win that dropped Penn College to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Kayleigh Miller, of Sayre, tallied 15 points to lead the Wildcats. Ja’Quela Dyer, of Dover, Delaware, had nine rebounds.

Hosting Penn State Harrisburg on Friday, Penn College fell, 71-66, to drop to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in the UEC. Getting a team-best 20-point, 13-rebound performance from Dyer, the Wildcats trailed by 12 points in the third quarter before rallying to knot the score at 57 with 8:18 to play. PS Harrisburg then used a 14-9 run to close the contest. In addition to Dyer, two other Penn College players also had double-doubles as Rachel Teats, of Middleburg, scored 11 points and had 11 boards, and Cassi Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
