Penn College wrestlers in holiday split

Saturday, December 25, 2021

On Monday at Lycoming College in the Rennie Roadarmel Allstate Duals, the Wildcats went 2-2 with wins over King’s College, 25-19, and New Jersey City University, 29-22, and losses to SUNY Cortland, 30-6, and the host team, 27-17, as their record went to 2-3. Even the loss to Lycoming was a bright spot as it marked the first points they ever have scored in a match against the Warriors.

Individually for Penn College, junior Jake Kallenborn, of Port Allegany, went 4-0 in the 184-pound weight class with a pin, two technical falls and a decision to hike his season record to 13-3.

Also ending the day with winning or .500 records were sophomores Andy Muzika, of Chalfont, at 165, and Noah Hunt, of Muncy, at 141 and 149 (both 2-1); junior Ryan Berstler, of Middletown, at 125, and sophomore Garrett Storch, of Canton, at 174 (both 2-2); and senior Colin Jens, of Centreville, Maryland, at 141 (1-1).

“I would like to highlight Jake Kallenborn. He’s been a rock for us at 184 this season since his medical return and has been all but unstoppable,” coach Jamie Miller said.

“Jake completed his associate degree, with honors, last Saturday, so his future with the team is uncertain as he is looking to enter the workforce. We want to thank Jake for all he brought to our program and wish him the best of luck as he takes the next step in his career.

“We came out a little flat against a very solid Cortland team but battled through each match. I am not sure the overall score was indicative of how competitive each match really was, as we lost a lot of close matches especially early on.

“(The) Guys bounced back against King’s, and we finally put together our most complete match so far. We took that energy into the Lycoming match and put forward a solid showing. Leading 17-15 heading into the last two bouts – we just didn’t have the firepower to match them at the end. We finished out the day with another really solid performance against NJCU, overcoming an early deficit. Our 141 through 184 really carried us — solid performances by Jens, Hunt, Semon, van Rooyen, Storch and Jake Kallenborn.

“It was good to get some wins heading into the break. We were not at all pleased with our performance at Rhode Island (Dec. 12) and knew we had to make some adjustments. The guys worked really, really hard … and it showed."
