An artful treat at gallery's meet-and-greet

An array of technology is visible – including in the hands of Adam J. Miller, manager of instructional media production, who captures footage of the exhibit.A group of engaged graphic design students oblige a photographer’s request at the exhibit’s title wall. In front of a color-rich creation, May discusses her process.

Graphic design students, as well as college and community members, enjoyed an intimate conversation Thursday night with artist Jeanette May in The Gallery at Penn College. As part of the reception for her “Tech Vanitas” exhibit, the Brooklyn, New York, photographer delivered a talk, sharing her inspirations and process, and answering questions on color and design. She also met post-talk with a group of graphic design students who further engaged her in questions and conversation.

As the sun sets on a late October day, the artist shares her insights with a rapt audience. May considers questions from curious graphic design students ... ... whose ideas for the exhibit’s title wall are on display in the gallery’s lobby. The students engaged in that artistic exploration in Environmental Graphic Design (ART320), a course exploring signage, wayfinding, exhibition graphics and environmental advertising.

In addition to being a treat for the young artists, the setting offered an extra pleasure for May, who savored seeing all pieces from her “Tech Vanitas” series on exhibit in one place for the first time. Pennsylvania College of Technology’s spacious and beautiful gallery is on the third floor of Madigan Library, and “Tech Vanitas” is on display through Nov. 23.

Hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. (The gallery is closed on Saturdays.) Admission is free and open to the public.
