It's tourney time for two Penn College fall sports

Sunday, October 24, 2021

Tournament time has arrived for athletes in two Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports as golfers compete in the United East Conference Fall Preview on Monday and cross-country runners vie for honors in the UEC Championships on Saturday.

Golf
Thus far, the Wildcats have competed in four events – winning one – and coach Matt Haile said, “I believe we are a couple shots away from where I thought we’d be leading into our UEC preview.

“We had a couple tournaments canceled due to rain, and several practice days cut short as well. Our players are working hard on the areas they need to improve on, which is their short game and shots from 120 yards and in.

“Individually, we have a solid three players (Alex Acree, of Brookville; Sean McNamara, of Lancaster; and Will Orwig, of Mifflintown) that have proved themselves in each of our matches, averaging 81 or better. This average is slightly higher than what they are used to and I think this can be equated to playing a lot of the courses for the first time.

“They are looking forward to playing the preview and taking notes and strategizing for the spring to make another run (and defending) at the conference championship.

“Other players that have shown progress in the lineup are Nate Hoyer, of Windsor; Gavin Baer, of Bainbridge; Karson Felty, of Pine Grove; and Trevor Keaton, of Lansdale. All seven of these players will be traveling for the preview and this will give me a good idea whether or not the course fits their eye.”

Commenting on the tournament site, Haile noted, “Rancocas Golf Club (in Willingboro, New Jersey) is a course (par 71, 6,602-yards designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.) I’m not familiar with, but the research I’ve done appears to present the player with tree-lined fairways, with a premium of keeping the ball in play. Out of bounds comes into play on a majority of holes and it will be important for proper club selection to give the player the best opportunity to score.”

Men’s/women’s cross-country
“It’s been a challenging season, but we have progressed as a team as the season went on,” coach Nick Patton said as his team prepped for the conference championship at Lancaster Bible College.

“We just have to go to UECs, put ourselves in a good position and race to the best of our ability,” the seventh-year coach continued, adding, “We haven’t raced at Lancaster Bible in a few years. Since then, the course has changed somewhat but looking at it, it looks like a fair course with a hill or two and various surfaces.”

During the regular season, both teams finished in the bottom half of their respective fields in invitational meets and in five outings there weren’t enough women to field a full team twice.

The season personal best for the men’s team in an 8K race was a 29:31.56 turned in by freshman Alec Rees, of Centerport, New York. Other top runners for the men’s squad have been sophomore Dean Fulton, of Palmyra; sophomore Noah Bowers, of Burnham; senior Nick Snow, of York; sophomore Will Deem, of Furlong; and sophomore AJ Wiles, of Glenville.

Junior Cinnamon Digan, of Mifflinburg, owns two team personal bests for the women’s squad with a time of 30:35.42 in a 6K race and 19:42.23 in a 4K race, while freshman Avery Baker, of Lock Haven, posted the best 5K race time of 25:40. Also running for Penn College have been junior Taylor Schon, of Selinsgrove; freshman Kayleigh Miller, of Sayre; and sophomore Aubrey Stetts, of Jersey Shore.
