Penn College fall sports teams reach halfway point

Penn College wildcatMost Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams have reached the midway point in their seasons, and over the past week, eight of nine saw action with four tasting victory.




Men’s soccer
In a nonconference match Tuesday at Keuka College, Tad Shellenberger, of Port Royal, gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with a goal at 15:58, but Keuka evened the score later in the first half and added three second-half goals en route to a 4-1 win that dropped Penn College to 1-5-2 overall. Keuka held a narrow edge in shots, 12-10 (6-4 on goal), and in corner kicks, 5-4.

Hosting Clarks Summit University in nonconference action on Thursday, Penn College won, 2-0, to go to 2-5-2 overall. Scoring for the Wildcats were Matt Neeson, of Chadds Ford, at 69:27 in the first half, and Colton Wartman, of Ellicott City, Maryland, at 9:16 in the second half. Penn College led in shots, 10-5 (4-1 on goal), while Clarks Summit led in corner kicks, 4-3.

On Saturday hosting Wells College in United East Conference action, the Wildcats posted a 3-0 win to even their conference record at 1-1-1 and go to 3-5-2 overall. Scoring for Penn College were Tyler Weimert, of Feasterville-Trevose, at 23:52 in the first half and Wartman and Tyler Hendershot, of New Columbia, at 53:05 and 81:42, respectively, in the second half. The Wildcats dominated in shots, 26-1 (12-0 on goal), and corner kicks, 10-0.

Women’s soccer
On Wednesday in nonconference play in the rain at Alfred State College, Kaelynn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, scored at 50:55 in the second half on an assist from Kristina Mease, of Richlandtown, and goalie Nicole Lichtinger, of Erie, made it stand up for a 1-0 win that evened the Wildcats’ overall record at 3-3. Penn College led in shots, 12-7 (each team had six shots on goal), while Alfred led in corner kicks, 5-3.

Hosting Wells College in a UEC match on Saturday, Penn College scored three goals in each half en route to a 6-0 win that took its conference record to 1-2 and overall record to 4-3. Teagan Willey, of Towanda, and Sloan Tressler, of Mill Hall, each scored twice. Willey also had two assists. The Wildcats led in shots, 35-1 (16-1 on goal), and in corner kicks, 9-0, while Lichtinger recorded her second consecutive shutout in goal.

Back in action on Sunday hosting Wilkes University in nonconference play, Penn College fell, 6-0, snapping its two-match win streak. Wilkes led in shots, 26-6 (19-5 on goal), and in corner kicks, 10-4, and in the process leveled the Wildcats’ record at 4-4 overall.

Women’s volleyball
Facing Alfred State College in nonconference action for the second time in four days, this time at Alfred on Monday, the Wildcats again lost, 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-6). Alfred led in points, 55-12; in kills, 38-9; and in aces, 14-3. Individually for Penn College, Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, led with six assists and shared the digs lead with Sierra Yaggie, of Troy, both with six, while Hannah Burnett, of Middlebury Center, was tops with five kills as the team fell to 1-5 overall.

Men’s/women’s tennis
Penn College split in nonconference tennis action against crosstown rival Lycoming College on Thursday with the men winning, 5-4, to go to 1-1 on the season and the women falling, 8-1, while dropping to 0-2. Winning in singles for the Penn College men were Tucker Phillippe-Johansson, of Mattituck, New York, at No. 1; Alexander Norris, of Williamsport, at No. 2; and Paul Langbein, of Carnegie, at No. 3. Doubles winners for the Wildcat men were Phillippe-Johansson/Langbein at No. 1 and Tommy Cavanaugh, of New Hope/Zack Burkhart, of Milton, at No. 3. The lone Penn College women’s win came at No. 2 doubles with Georgia Macensky, of Wellsboro/Amber Leitzel, of Mifflinburg, posting a victory.

Hosting Juniata College in nonconference matches on Sunday, Penn College swept Juniata College in tennis on Sunday with the men winning, 6-3, to improve to 2-1 and the women victorious, 7-2, with their first win against two defeats.

Singles winners for the men’s team were Phillippe-Johansson at No. 1, Norris at No. 2, Langbein at No. 3, and Jesse Kight, of Williamsport, at No. 4. Men’s doubles winners were Johansson-Langbein at No. 1 and Norris-Kight at No. 2. Winning in singles for the women’s squad were Macensky at No. 2; Leitzel at No. 3; Alexis Youse, of Pottstown, at No. 4; Delaney Bouton, of Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, at No. 5; and Marcie Harman, of Nescopeck, at No. 6. Penn College women’s doubles winners were Macensky-Leitzel at No. 2 and Youse-Harman at No. 3.

Men’s/women’s cross-country
On Saturday in nonconference races at the Dickinson College Long-Short Invitational, the Penn College men finished 18th with 203 points over an 8,000-meter course and the women 17th with 225 points over a 4,000-meter course. Alec Rees, of Centerport, New York, led the Wildcat men with a 69th-place finish in 30:51.7 and Cinnamon Digan, of Mifflinburg, finished 118th in 19:42.23 to lead the Penn College women. Messiah College topped the 21-team men’s field with 26 points and Dickinson’s Christopher Scharf won the individual race in a field of 141 with a time of 26:06.9. In the women’s short race, Shippensburg University took honors among 18 teams with 10 points and Dickinson’s Isabel Cardi won the 153-runner race in 14:32.1.

Penn College lost to Tufts University, 3-1, in Rocket League action on Monday, while the Overwatch competition against Rutgers University was postponed due to the pro Overwatch Championship, according to coach Joshua Young.

Hall of Fame inductions
Penn College inducted four new members into its Athletics Hall of Fame Friday evening as part of Homecoming and Parent & Family Weekend. Comprising the previously announced Class of 2021: James Woodring (baseball), Jamie Steer (basketball), Kendel Baier (archery) and Scott Kennell (administrator). Since 2012, 43 people have been inducted into the hall. There were no inductions last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
