After nearly a week of 94-degree shade, stifling humidity and minimal breeze, who doesn't need a refreshing splash of General Services whimsy? Just as Victorian-era households prided themselves on their gardens – trying to outdo their neighbors with bigger, bloomier and more elaborate layouts – the GS grounds crew is seemingly in a perpetual race to one-up itself! Yup, there's something new from the fine folks who brought us a pickup-truck fountain, flowering picture frames, "Penn College" shrubbery along the entranceway and botanical beauty everywhere we look: a water feature outside The Victorian House. Taking its cue from a Native American proverb, "All the flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today," campus horticulturists brainstormed, crafted and installed a dandelion sprinkler amid the landmark's landscaping. Because the attractive venue is one of the sites for wedding photos, the seedhead can double as a repository for newlyweds' aspirations. As shared by Andrea L. Dildine, horticulturist/grounds and motorpool manager, "Some see a weed, while others see a wish."
