Penn College students obtain industry certification

Wednesday, March 17, 2021

Eyeing careers in engineering design, five Pennsylvania College of Technology students bolstered their resumes by earning an impressive industry certification.

The students – all seeking a bachelor’s degree in engineering design technology – passed the Certified SolidWorks Professional exam. The resulting certification proves the students’ advanced skills with SolidWorks, a prominent solid modeling computer-aided design and engineering program employed in manufacturing industries worldwide.

Among those passing the Certified SolidWorks Professional exam are (from left) Michael R. Naugler, of Sykesville, Md.; Nathanael T. Morgan, of Shirleysburg; and Kevin W. Brewer, of Newtown.“The exam is a rigorous test of our students’ skills and abilities,” said Craig A. Miller, instructor and department head of engineering and industrial design technology. “Passing the exam speaks to our students’ dedication to their studies, their drive to succeed and their value to future employers.”

Other engineering design technology students attaining certification: Benson P. Weaver, of Lititz (left), and Jack P. Ralston, of Bloomsburg. Passing the test were: Kevin W. Brewer, Newtown; Nathanael T. Morgan, Shirleysburg; Michael R. Naugler, Sykesville, Maryland; Jack P. Ralston, Bloomsburg; and Benson P. Weaver, Lititz.

The students had to tackle a series of solid modeling, drawing and assembly problems related to mechanical design. They had 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete the exam.

“The certification sets our students apart from the competition,” Miller said. “As a department, we could not be prouder.

In addition to the bachelor’s degree in engineering design technology, Penn College offers an associate degree in engineering CAD technology and a bachelor’s degree in industrial design.
